  29.                     INSTALLING CANONDISK
  30.                     --------------------

  32. CanonDisk   is   divided   into  two  independent  parts.   During
  33. installation  a  user  can  choose just the required part, or both
  34. parts.
  35.  
  36.                        Canon Driver
  37.  
  38. The  Canon  drivers  are  supplements  to  the  Commodore supplied
  39. printer  drivers.   They  are 100 percent Amiga compatible printer
  40. drivers,  even  though  they  offer  many  more functions than the
  41. standard printer drivers.  The additional functions of the drivers
  42. are controlled by the preferences program included with CanonDisk.
  43.  
  44.                     CanonStudio Program
  45.  
  46. The  purpose of the CanonStudio program is to print graphics.  The
  47. disk  only contains a very limited version of CanonStudio.  To say
  48. it  clear:   the  Canon Workbench drivers are fully functional and
  49. not limited in any way.  Only the CanonStudio printing program has
  50. to  be  registered  if  wanted.   See below on how to get the full
  51. version  of  CanonStudio  if  wanted.   Pictures  are  printed  by
  52. CanonStudio  directly  from disk without the need for much memory.
  53. For  instance  you  can print a huge 10 MBytes picture on an Amiga
  54. that is equipped with only 1 MBytes of memory.
  55.  
  56. If  you  have  a colour printer you can print with 24 bitplanes of
  57. colour  accuracy (16.7 million colours).  If you have a monochrome
  58. printer  you can print with 8 bitplanes of greyscale accuracy (256
  59. greys).    If   you   were   not   using   CanonStudio's  printing
  60. capabilities,  the  Amiga's  own  colour  printing  capacity is 12
  61. bitplanes   for   colour  (4096  colours),  and  4  bitplanes  for
  62. greyscales (16 greys).  Printing pictures through CanonStudio does
  63. therefore give a user greater precision.
  64.  
  65. The  CanonStudio  picture-printing  program works with every Amiga
  66. printer  driver  but  this  version  is  limited to just the Canon
  67. Workbench  drivers.   If  you  require a Version that supports all
  68. drivers purchase the ``Studio Printer Software'' package from your
  69. dealer.

  72. The programs and drivers are described in detail later.  Start the
  73. installation  by  double-clicking  with  the  mouse  button on the
  74. Install icon, found in the main drawer of the CanonDisk.

  79. Follow the instructions below to install the Canon software:
  80.  
  81.  
  82. * Configure and connect your printer as described in the printer's
  83. user manual and the Amiga system manual.
  84.  
  85. * Set your printers dip switches as described in the table below:
  86.

  99.                  Perform the "Setup for Amiga" action.

  106.                  Use the installed SetupBJL-BJC4xxx program.
  107.                  Perform the "Setup for Amiga" action.
  108.  
  109. Please note these settings reflect those of DIN A4 paper size
  110. users. US Letter paper users require a slightly different setting.
  111.  
  112. * Boot your Amiga with your usual system or Workbench disk.
  113.  
  114. *  If  you don't own a hard drive, prepare an empty floppy disk by
  115. using the system Format command.
  116.  
  117. *  We  anticipate  that  most Canon users will want to install the
  118. program  on to a hard drive.  If you do not have a hard drive then
  119. you  must  install  some  parts  (documentation  and CanonPref) of
  120. CanonDisk  onto  an  empty floppy, using the supplied installation
  121. program.   You  cannot  run  the  Canon software directly from its
  122. installation disk because it is stored in a compressed format.
  123.  
  124. *  If  your  system  has  only  a single floppy drive (and no hard
  125. drive), the installation program will cause a large number of disk
  126. swaps while it gets things prepared for the main installation.
  127.  
  128. * Double click on the Install icon found in the main drawer of the
  129. CanonDisk.   The  installation  process  is automatic and uses the
  130. Commodore  standard  Installer  program.  The installation process
  131. has  been  designed to provide on-line instructions as you install
  132. the  product.   Any  questions  that  you  might  have  about  the
  133. installation  process  should  be  answered  by  the  on-line help
  134. contained in the installation program.
  135.  
  136. The  install program will copy the driver to your system disk.  In
  137. order  to do so, you need 47 KByte empty disk space on your system
  138. disk.  Additional programs can be saved to an empty floppy disk or
  139. hard disk and may not be saved to the system disk.
  140.    
  141. !  Most likely floppy users must make space on their system disk in
  142.    order to install the driver. This can be done by deleting unneeded
  143.    programs using the Workbenchs 3.0 "Delete..." menu item.
  144.    The installation program will do the job for you if you like.
  145.    You will be asked before each file is deleted.
  146.    
  147.    Here is list of programs that might be deleted:

  149.    Sys:Utilities/Clock        (13 KByte)
  150.    Sys:devs/printers/generic  (1.5 KByte)
  151.    Sys:system/nofastmem       (1 KByte)
  152.    Sys:c/Edit                 (15 KByte)
  153.    Sys:c/Diskchange           (0.5 KByte)
  154.    Sys:c/Lock                 (0.5 KByte)
  155.    Sys:c/Search               (1.5 KByte)
  156.    Sys:c/MagTape              (1.5 KByte)
  157.    Sys:c/Which                (1.5 KByte)
  158.  
  159. * Canon BJC800 and 4550 users should note, that these printers are
  160. single  page  printers.  They don't support continuous form paper.
  161. Because  of  this the page length must be defined by the driver if
  162. it  differs  from  the  one  set  in the printer by SetupBJL.  The
  163. driver  can do this automaticly for you, in case you set the paper
  164. length  in  Workbench  preferences  to 250 lines.  Don't forget to
  165. turn  on  "Enable  Form"  in  the CanonBJECPref program!  Select a
  166. paper type of "Wide Tractor" for printing on DIN A3 sized paper.
  167.  
  168. * Select a paper type of Wide Tractor for printing on DIN A3 sized
  169. paper on BJ 230 or BJ330 printers.
  170.  
  171. *  Please note that each Canon driver uses it's own setting files.
  172. You  may  install  several  Canon  drivers  as  long  as  they are
  173. different.
  174.  
  175. *  The  installation  program also installs a README file with the
  176. driver and CanonStudio covering the software in detail.
  177.  
  178. *  In  case of problems with the software use the "Report" program
  179. described by the installed README file!
  180.  
  181. * Canon BJC users:  please note that printing 720 dpi or using the
  182. Photo  Ink  cartridge usualy requires major changes to the drivers
  183. color   adjustments.   Use  the  CanonBJECPref  menu  presets  for
  184. adjusting  the  driver  color if you don't want to do it yourself.
  185.  
  186. Note  that  the Canon BJC will only print 720 graphics in BJC mode
  187. (extended  emulation).   For  best  image  dumps  on the Amiga use
  188. CanonStudio's   CMS   for   printing  720dpi  (only  available  to
  189. registered users).
  190.  
  191. If you experience strong stripes/banding of 1mm height in your BJC
  192. 610  and  620  output:  make sure you run the print head alignment
  193. test  as  described  in  the BJC manual.  Also make sure the print
  194. head  is  ok.   Perform a printer nozzles test as described in the
  195. manual  and  clean the print head several times.  In some cases it
  196. can  help to print 20-30 fully colored pages if the print head was
  197. new.   The stripes are not caused by the printer driver.  However,
  198. your  print  mode,  dither  method  and  paper used are important.
  199. Don't  try  to print high resolution on bad paper.  You rather get
  200. worse results compared to 360 dpi dumps.  If you do experience 1mm
  201. height  stripes,  try  switching the dither method.  The BJC often
  202. prints  less  horizontal  stripes  when  using  an error diffusion
  203. (Floyd,  Stucki,...)  or  Blue  Noise dither method.  However this
  204. might slow down your printing speed .
  205.  
  206. *  Canon  BJC  4xxx  users:  please note that printing 720*360 dpi
  207. using   the  CanonBJ-EC  Workbench  driver  requires  major  color
  208. adjustments.  Use the CanonBJECPref menu presets for adjusting the
  209. driver for 720dpi support.  Note that the Canon BJC 4xxx will only
  210. print  720*360dpi  graphics in BJC mode (extended emulation).
  211.  
  212. For  best  image  dumps  on  the  Amiga  use CanonStudio's CMS for
  213. printing 720*360dpi (only available to registered users).
  214.  
  215. *  IMPORTANT!   Canon  BJC  150  users:  the Canon BJC 150 printer
  216. doesn't  offer  any  text  support.   Because of this, the current
  217. driver  version requires an application that prints text using the
  218. drivers  graphic mode.  Most major applications (Final Copy, Final
  219. Writer, WordWorth, PageStream, Professional Page...) do offer this
  220. feature  by  default and the Canon BJC 150 can be used without any
  221. drawbacks  on  the Amiga.  In order to make text only applications
  222. printing  on  the  BJC  150, we are working on a new driver.  This
  223. driver  will be able to print text using any Amiga font.  However,
  224. this  is a complex task and will require several driver updates to
  225. come  until  the  support  for  all  Amiga  text style commands is
  226. complete.
  227.  
  228. So  please,  watch  the Canon internet sites, CompuServe AmigaUser
  229. forum  library,  Internet (Canon's WWW sites or AmiNet text/print)
  230. and  Canon  BBS's for updates to the Canon driver as major updates
  231. are ahead.
  232.    
  233. *  Canon  BJC  210, 240, 250 (= BJC 2xx) users should carefully
  234. note following limitations:
  235.  
  236. 1.   The  Canon BJC 2xx can't print color graphics and text on the
  237. same  page.   The  printer  can  only  print color in the Extended
  238. Emulation  set  using CanonBJECPref's "Emul" gadget. See the
  239. readme file for the limitations of the Extended emulation.
  240.  
  241. 2.   Any  try  to  print  color  graphics  with  the drivers Epson
  242. emulations will result in a bad greyscale output.  Don't try it.
  243.  
  244. 3.   In order to help you switching, CanonBJECPref offers a preset
  245. menu  for  both, the BC 02 and BC05 cartridge.  Using the presets,
  246. CanonBJECPref will be setup to the wanted emulation and the colors
  247. of  the  output  are  adjusted  accordingly (for normal NeuSielder
  248. ColorCopy xerox paper).
  249.  
  250. 4.   Note:   after  installing a PageStream 2.x driver, select the
  251. CanonBJC800  driver  from  PageStream.   The CanonBJC800 driver is
  252. compatible  with  the  BJC  2xx and thus there is no BJC2xx driver
  253. necessary.
  254.  
  255. *  This  note  seems  necessary  as  I  got  several  user letters
  256. reporting  problems  after not following this install instruction:
  257. Users  of  the new BJC 210, 240, 250, 4100, 4200, 4300, 4550, 4650
  258. should  run  the  SetupBJL  program once after installation.  This
  259. makes sure the printer is set to the proper emulation and possible
  260. bad characters at the start of the page are avoided.
  261.  
  262. *  User  of  the  Photo  Ink  cartridges should be aware, that the
  263. CanonBJ-EC  driver  only  offers Photo Ink when using the Extended
  264. emulation and the print mode was set to "Photo Ink".  Also, if you
  265. do  use Photo Ink, I strongly recommend registering CanonStudio as
  266. only  CanonStudio  offers  a complex color correction able to give
  267. you  Photo  like  quality advertised (by the time of this writing,
  268. CanonStudio's  Photo  Ink  output is even better of better quality
  269. than those of the Windows 95 driver!!!)
  270.  
  271. * Users that do have to switch print cartridges manualy, should be
  272. aware  of problems caused by bad treatment of the print cartridge.
  273. For instance, users switching between the normal ink cartridge and
  274. the  photo  ink  cartridge should take great care in storing their
  275. cartridges.   Especialy  the Photo Ink cartridge is easily damaged
  276. when  touching  the cartridges print head.  If you do want to seal
  277. it, use the tape that came with the cartridge (if you don't have a
  278. real  container).  Try avoiding the (usualy orange) plastic shield
  279. that  covered  the  new  print  head without taping the print head
  280. first.
  281.  
  282. Important:   use  SetupBJL  to clean the print head after changing
  283. it!!!   Otherwise  your  output  might  have bad colors (to say at
  284. least).
  285.  
  286. After  successfully running the Install program, try printing from
  287. the  application with which you normally print.  In most cases you
  288. should  straight  away  notice  major  improvements  in  speed and
  289. quality, but you can do much better once you have adjusted all the
  290. settings   of   the   driver   to  match  your  environment.   The
  291. installation  program  is unable to adjust all the driver settings
  292. for   your  printer  because  every  printer,  paper  and  ink  is
  293. different.   It  is your task now to use your experience with your
  294. software  and  printer  to further adjust the settings made by the
  295. Install  program.   This  will  result  in further improvements in
  296. output quality.
  297.  
  298. Please  share  your printing experiences with other Canon users by
  299. sending  your  settings  to  Wolf  Faust.   This will allow future
  300. enhancements  of  CanonDisk.   You  can easily print your settings
  301. using  the  Report program mentioned in the error chapter.  Please
  302. don't  forget to mention the name of your printer, and the type of
  303. paper you are using.

  308.                         CanonStudio
  309.                         ===========
  310.  
  311. Beside  the  free and fully functional Canon printer drivers, this
  312. disk  contains  a  LIMITED VERSION of CanonStudio.  You can use it
  313. for  printing pictures.  Though, many functions have been disabled
  314. forcing  you to register and get the latest full featured version.
  315. This  program  is included as free offer to all Canon users and is
  316. not  part of the main Canon drivers.  Canon is not responsibel for
  317. any support, update or warranty regarding CanonStudio.
  318.  
  319. CanonStudio  is especialy recommended to all users using the Photo
  320. Ink  cartridge  of  the  new  Canon  printers.  Note that only the
  321. registered CanonStudio offers you real Photo Ink output.
  322.  
  323. In  case  you use CanonStudio register the program or this product
  324. will  most likely not be supported in the future (programs do cost
  325. more  than  time  to  develop).   Also,  your  shareware fee is my
  326. motivation  for  enhancements.   If you like, you may also buy the
  327. commercial  "Studio"  printer  software  from  your  Amiga  dealer
  328. instead of registering CanonStudio.  Studio does additionaly offer
  329. you  a nice printed manual, driver support and drivers for various
  330. non-Canon   printers.   But  as  far  as  the  Canon  software  is
  331. concerned, Studio doesn't offer you more software.
  332.  
  333. Registered   users   get   an  update  service  and  an  unlimited
  334. CanonStudio version for all orig. Canon drivers.
  335.  
  336. CanonStudio  can  also  be  ordered  as  CDROM version (default is
  337. floppy  disk!).   This  allows  us  to  ship  additional  software
  338. (currently:   the  PageStream  V3  Universal graphi import filter,
  339. large  images, the latest CanonDisks).  The price of the CD ROM is
  340. equal  to  the disk version.  So please note if you would prefer a
  341. CD ROM  of  CanonStudio.  In case the CD ROM is available you will
  342. receive the CD ROM instead of the floppy disk version.  The amount
  343. of  CDROM's  is  limited  and  thus, I can't make any promises for
  344. shipping the CDROM instead of the floppy disk version.
